What is the caste of the child in an intercaste marriage?

In inter-caste marriage, the child belongs to the father's caste. However, as per the Supreme Court,  the benefits of reservation can not be denied to a person born to SC or ST mother because the father belonged to the upper caste.

So there is no general rule for assigning the caste of the child born out of inter-caste marriage. The society in which a person, born out of an inter-caste marriage, grows up needs to be regarded while deciding whether he was entitled to reservation or not.
