National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (NAIS) is implemented from the Kharif 2000 season with an objective to provide a measure of financial support to the farmers in the event of Crop loss due to any calamity to restore the credit eligibility for the next season and to stabilize farm incomes.

  • Andhra Pradesh is the only State to have "Village as Insurance Unit" Scheme in all the districts of the Andhra state from Kharif 2008 season onwards. The Village level insurance programme provided more benefits to the farmers as the losses in smaller areas would be more representative. The crops for the village level implementation are selected based on the cropped area under the principal crops.

  • As regards the position of Crop Insurance at present, A.P. stands in No. 1 position in terms of area covered, farmers covered/claims paid and farmers benefited. Recently the Claims in respect of Kharif 2011 & Rabi 2011-12 amounting to Rs. 460.30 Cr. in favor of 10.20 lakh farmers was released for all the twenty two districts.

  • Crop Insurance Scheme, from the inception of the scheme i.e from the Kharif 2000 season an Under amount of Rs.4651.38 Crores paid as Crop Insurance Claim benefiting 72 lakh farmers in the State.

Eligibility Criteria for YSR Free Crop Insurance

All the farmers irrespective of their category of marginal farmers/small farmers or big farmers including Tenant farmers & sharecroppers are eligible to enroll under Crop Insurance Scheme. Corp Insurance is compulsory to all loanee farmers and voluntary to non-loanee farmers.

Crops Covered under YSR Free Crop Insurance

Paddy, Jowar, Bajra, Maize, Blackgram, Greengram, Redgram, Soybean, Groundnut (I), Groundnut (UI) Sunflower, Castor, Sugarcane (Plant), Sugarcane (Ratoon), Cotton (I), Cotton (UI), Chillies (I), Chillies, Turmeric, (UI), Korra (20) Crops.

Coverage to Farmers under YSR Free Crop Insurance

Following are the coverage benefits to farmers under YSR Free Crop Insurance.

  • All the cultivators growing notified crops in notified areas, whose crop details are captured through the e-crop (a software application for capturing crop details) and after successful completion of farmer e-kyc and social audit become eligible for coverage under this scheme.

  • Farmers need not pay anything in the shape of premium, and the State Govt will also pay the Farmer's share along with the premium subsidy for all the approved applications in the National Crop Insurance Portal (NCIP)

  • The ICs have the right to verify the correctness of e-crop data against each application till completion of the social audit. Any discrepancy that is found further in time shall be taken to the notice of the State Govt. Subject to approval by the State Govt, the ICs will be allowed to reject such applications in the National Crop Insurance Portal.

  • It shall not be open for the insurance company to take a stand independently without consent of the State Govt & GOI. The e-crop data will be the final data for coverage and there shall not be any separate enrolment by the ICs

  • The data recorded in the e-crop portal will be transmitted to the National Crop Insurance Portal (NCIP).

Coverage of Risks under YSR Free Crop Insurance

Coverage risks to farmers under YSR Free Crop Insurance are:

  • Dr YSRFCI-RWBCIS is a weather index-based insurance scheme. The financial loss of a farmer growing notified crops in notified areas is calculated under Dr YSRFCI-RWBCIS by comparing the actual Weather data against pre-defined triggers over an insurance period.

  • Entire or partial crop life cycle stages susceptible to crop loss due to inclement weather conditions are covered under the scheme. All such perils which are caused by the weather conditions and are measurable and quantifiable in Automatic Weather Stations or Automatic Rain Gauges stands covered under RWBCIS, according to the term-sheet.
