In Karnataka, Is a car's renewal of registration different from fitness certificate ? If I have a valid renewal of registration for my 15 year old car, is it necessary for me to get a fitness certificate as well ?

For private vehicle, renewal of registration of the vehicle is not the same as getting a fitness certificate.

You will get your vehicle with a renewed registration certificate, only if the vehicle is in good working condition.

The Vehicle Registration and Fitness Certificate is valid for 15 years. On the expiry of validity, Vehicle Registration and Fitness Certificate needs to be renewed every 5 years.

Procedure to obtain renewal of registration certificate

  • The owner shall obtain renewal of registration certificate in respect of Non-Transport vehicles after completion of 15 years of the age of the vehicle.
  • Application for renewal of registration certificate shall be made in Form CMV25 not more than 60 days before the date of its expiry along with the required documents (Registration Certificate, Insurance Certificate, Tax Card, Pollution Under Control Certificate) and  prescribed fee of INR 200 for cars.
  • Vehicle owner should produce the Vehicle for inspection at RTO.
  • After inspection by the Inspecting Authority, if the vehicle complies with requirements of Motor Vehicles Act and rules made thereunder, the registration certificate will be renewed for a further period of 5 years.

If you are driving your vehicle in India, post 15 years of its age, then you should have both a valid registration certificate and fitness certificate.

For private vehicles, both this certificate has a vailidity of 15 years when you buy it. Post that, you need to get new certificate.

Renewal of registration certificate and Fitness Certificate are two different things.

Under the provisions of Motor Vehicles Act., the registration of vehicle is treated as valid only if the vehicle have valid certificate of fitness.

For Issue/Renewal of Fitness Certificate, you need to apply in Form 20.

For Renewal of Registration Certificate, you need to apply in Form 25. You will get your vehicle with a renewed registration certificate, only if the vehicle is in good working condition.
