How to apply for an approval to design a building in historical areas in Dubai?

This service enables you to obtain the approval of Dubai Municipality to construct a modern building with heritage facades in the historic area, or the approval of buildings exterior finishes, or modifications to commercial storefronts. It also enables you to obtain an approval of the interior design plans of buildings and storefronts in the historic areas to preserve its urban fabric, or to furnish stores in a simple way (movable items that do not require technical works).

Documents Required

Approval of heritage facades or exterior cladding finishes:

  • Photos of the land or building.

  • Architectural plans PDF + DWG format (for approvals of heritage facades).

  • Samples or photos of the exterior cladding materials (for approvals of exterior cladding finishes).

  • Letter from the consultant approving the cladding materials (for approvals of heritage finishes).

  • Undertaking letter to install heritage doors upon Dubai Municipality's request (for heritage facades approvals).

Approval of interior design plans for a building in the historic area:

  • Photos of the building or shop.

  • Interior design plans of the building in PDF format (for interior design application).

  • Samples or photos of the interior design materials (for interior design application).

  • Photos of the shop's furniture (for simple furnishing application).

How to apply for an approval to design a building in historical areas in Dubai?

  • Login to Dubai Municipality website.

  • Apply for the service. 

  • Check Dubai Municipality's reply through the website (Approved/ Rejected/ To be Amended or Completed).

  • Pay the due fees within 3 days.

  • Receive the permit through the website.

Fees Required

  • AED 100.

  • Knowledge and Innovation Fees: AED 20.

Time Required

  • 5 hours after paying the fees.

Terms and Conditions

  • Fees must be paid within 3 days to avoid cancellation of the application.

  • Obtaining the necessary permits in accordance with the procedures for building permits and other entities (Dubai Civil Defense, Dubai Electricity & Water Authority....).

  • The owner/consultant/contractor must contact the Architectural Heritage and Antiquities Department in the event of modifying architectural/interior designs or building materials.
