എല്ലാ വര്‍ഷവും മെയ് 8 ന് ലോക റെഡ് ക്രോസ് ദിനം ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. റെഡ് ക്രോസിന്റെ സ്ഥാപകനായ ജീന്‍ ഹെന്റി ഡുനാന്റെ ജന്മദിനമാണ് ലോക റെഡ് ക്രോസ് ദിനമായി ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നത്.
1828 മെയ് 8 ന് സ്വിറ്റ്‌സര്‍ലന്‍ഡിലെ ജനീവ നഗരത്തിലാണ് ജീന്‍ ഹെന്റി ഡുനന്റ് ജനിച്ചത്. 1901-ല്‍ ലോകത്തിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ സമാധാനത്തിനുള്ള നോബല്‍ സമ്മാനം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ലഭിച്ചു.
1863-ല്‍ ഇന്റര്‍നാഷണല്‍ കമ്മറ്റി ഓഫ് റെഡ് ക്രോസ് (ICRC) സ്ഥാപിച്ചത് ജീന്‍ ഡുനന്റാണ്. പിന്നീട് 1920-ല്‍ ഇന്ത്യയില്‍ സമാനമായ ഒരു സംഘടന രൂപീകരിച്ചു. അതിന് 'ഇന്ത്യന്‍ റെഡ് ക്രോസ് സൊസൈറ്റി' എന്ന് പേരിട്ടു.
മനുഷ്യത്വമുള്ളവരായിരിക്കുക എന്നതാണ് ഈ വര്‍ഷത്തെ ലോക റെഡ് ക്രോസ് ദിന പ്രമേയം.
ലോക റെഡ് ക്രോസ് ദിനത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രം
1859-ല്‍ സോള്‍ഫെറിനോയില്‍ (ഇറ്റലി) ഒരു കടുത്ത യുദ്ധം നടന്നു. അതില്‍ നാല്‍പതിനായിരത്തിലധികം സൈനികര്‍ മരിക്കുകയും ദശലക്ഷക്കണക്കിന് ആളുകള്‍ക്ക് പരിക്കേല്‍ക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. മുറിവേറ്റ സൈനികരുടെ അവസ്ഥ കണ്ട് ഹെന്റി ഡുനന്റ് വളരെ ദുഃഖിതനായിരുന്നു. തുടര്‍ന്ന് ഹെന്റി ഡുനന്റ് ഗ്രാമത്തിലെ ചില ആളുകളുമായി ചേര്‍ന്ന് ആ സൈനികരെ സഹായിച്ചു.
അതിനുശേഷം, 1863-ല്‍ അദ്ദേഹം ഒരു കമ്മിറ്റി രൂപീകരിച്ചു, അത് റെഡ് ക്രോസിന്റെ ഇന്റര്‍നാഷണല്‍ കമ്മിറ്റി എന്ന് നാമകരണം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടു. ലോക റെഡ് ക്രോസ് ദിനം ആദ്യമായി ആചരിച്ചത് 1948 ലാണ്.
എന്താണ് റെഡ് ക്രോസ്
പകര്‍ച്ചവ്യാധികള്‍, പ്രകൃതി ദുരന്തങ്ങള്‍, യുദ്ധങ്ങള്‍, അടിയന്തര സാഹചര്യങ്ങള്‍ എന്നിവയില്‍ വിവേചനമില്ലാതെ ആളുകളെ സഹായിക്കുന്ന ഒരു അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര സംഘടനയാണ് റെഡ് ക്രോസ്. ഏറ്റവും മോശം സാഹചര്യങ്ങളിലും മനുഷ്യരാശിയെ സേവിക്കുക എന്നതാണ് ഈ സ്ഥാപനത്തിന്റെ രൂപീകരണത്തിന്റെ ലക്ഷ്യം. റഷ്യയും യുക്രൈനും തമ്മില്‍ നടക്കുന്ന യുദ്ധത്തില്‍ പരിക്കേറ്റവരെയും സൈനികരെയും റെഡ് ക്രോസ് സംഘടന സഹായിച്ചു വരുന്നു.
