It has been 5 months since I sent my application to replace an expired US passport. The only status I see is processing. How can I be sure the application is actually being processed and not simply lost?

If the application currently shows as "in process" when you check online, the application is still being worked on. Usually, if processing takes longer than the posted processing times, more documentation may have been needed.

If so, you will receive a letter.
