Can my wife and I with valid US passports take our child into Canada and bring him back over the Washington State land crossing with his birth certificate since his passport is expired and the new one isn't here yet even though we ordered expedited service more than 2 months ago?

Please see Travel Advisory for Entry: Canadian law requires that all persons entering Canada carry proof of citizenship & identity.

A valid U.S. passport, passport card, or NEXUS card satisfies these requirements. Children under 16 only need proof of U.S. citizenship.

The Travel Advisory on the website provide details on entry into Canada. There are links also to Canada Border Services Agency.
