How to get Marriage Certificate in Kerala?

Marriage certificate is a document that provides valuable evidence of marriage, social security, self-confidence particularly among married women. Certificate of marriage is an official document confirming the evidence of marriage.

Marriage Laws and Regulations in Kerala

State Governments govern marriage laws and regulations in Kerala. A marriage can be registered under the following Acts:

  • Hindu Marriage Act: The Hindu Marriage Act is applicable in cases where both the husband and the wife are Hindus, Buddhists, Jains or Sikhs, or in cases where they have converted into any of these religions

  • Special Marriage Act: People of any faith can get married under the Special Marriage Act. However, before being registered under the Special Marriage Act, the bride and groom must approach the local Registrar’s office and apply for marriage registration.

Eligibility Criteria to Register Marriage in Kerala

Following are the eligibility criteria to get a Marriage Certificate in Kerala.

  • The Eligible age to get married is 21 for male and 18 for female in Kerala.

  • Bridegroom who desires to marry should not have a married wife.

  • Bridegroom who cannot voluntarily give consent for marriages owing to mental illness is not eligible for marriage.

  • Those suffering from insanity are ineligible for solemnisation of marriage.

  • Marriage of those who are capable of giving consent for marriage but incapable of getting a child owing to unsound mind cannot be solemnised nor be registered.

Note: You cannot apply for a marriage certificate if you have not attained the age limit as this will be treated as an offence in Kerala.

Documents Required to Register Marriage in Kerala

Following documents are required for applying Marriage Certificate in Kerala.

  • Attested copy of the certificate that proves the age of husband

  • Attested copy of the certificate that proves the age of the wife

  • Copy of the Certificate from auditorium or marriage place or religious authority concerned or a declaration in form II obtained from an MP or MLA or Gazetted Officer or Member of Local Self Government Institution about solemnization of marriages

  • The marriage invitation letter is optional

  • For age proof documents, namely SSLC book or driving license or Passport or School admission register or other records that are issued by the Government is acceptable

  • Identify the Proof of Bride and Groom

  • Address Proof of Bride and Groom

How to Register Marriage in Kerala Online?

Follow the below steps to register marriage in Kerala. 

  • Visit the Sevana website.

  • Click on 'Online form submission'.

  • Select the District, Local body type and Local body.

  • Click on 'Submit'.

  • If you an existing user login using the User name and Password. If you are a new user, select "New login".

  • After completion of the registration, you will receive the data entry screen for Form 1.Data entry should be done as per details required in the form. All the * marked fields are mandatory. For place of marriage, a combo selection is provided by including all marriage places/Mandapams. If the place of marriage is not seen in the drop-down list, select others where details can be entered in a text box. Post office and pin code are compulsory in address fields. The custom followed for marriage can also be selected, details of documents for proof of custom followed, age, etc may also be furnished . 

Marriage Certificate Kerala Apply Online Registration

  • Enter the details.

  • Upload the photos of the Groom and Bride.

  • Click on 'Submit'.

  • On successful submission, the Form I can be generated for verification, which can be edited if required. The reference number of the form is printed on the top left hand corner. If one is making any correction, resubmit the form for updating the correction. 

  • Take a print out of this form and submit it to the concerned local body duly signed by all concerned.

  • The husband and wife need to file this application in person along with the required fee in the concerned local body where the Marriage is solemnized.

  •  The concerned official of local body will download the application from web, incorporate inward number and fee payment details, verify the particulars with the documents furnished, make correction if necessary, take a print out in Form III, get it signed by husband and wife. This will complete the registration process as per rule applications given with in one year. For applications applied after one year of solemnisation registration will be done only after getting the delay condoned from the authorised authority.

  • After the verification, the concerned official will issue Form III to husband and wife to sign on that.

In case of delayed application, the registration officials will forward the application along with the Form II and other mandatory enclosures to the concerned Registrar General for condoning the delay. 

Note: The e-furnishing of data will not be considered as the statutory filing of memorandum for marriage registration as prescribed in the rule. As per the existing rule, the husband and wife should appear before the registrar for signing for registration of the marriage.

Follow the below steps to search for Marriage Certificate in Kerala.

  • Visit Sevana website.

  • Click on 'Certificate search' option.

  • Based on the type of Marriage Registration, you can select either Marriage(Hindu) Registrations or Marriage(Common) Registrations.

  • Select the year of Marriage.

  • Select the District, Local Body type and Local body.

  • Click on 'Submit'.

  • Select 'Marriage Certificate' option.

  • Provide the required details.

Marriage Registration Fees in Kerala

Under Hindu Marriage Act, fee for application is Rs.5 and fee for certified copy is Rs.10. No fee is prescribed for registration of marriage.

Under the Special Marriage Act, the fee for solemnization of marriage is Rs.10, Rs.15 extra for solemnization in place other than office. Fee for notice of intended marriage is Rs 3. Fee for a certified copy of the marriage certificate is Rs.2.
