There are two steps to obtain death certificate.

Step 1: Check whether the death certificate is already issued or not. Here we assume that death is registered at the event of death. Few of the state governments in India allow online application of death certificates. Details of them are provided below.

If you belong to any of these States, check the website of that particular State whether they allow search and download of death certificate. For example, Government of Kerala allows searching of the death records based on Date of Death,Gender and Mother’s Name.

So even if you lose the death certificate , you can search for it and download it, provided your State digitised the death records.

Step 2: In case, the death is not already registered at the time of death, following documents are required to get Death Certificate,

  • Get Non-Availability Certificate from the Registrars office. The Non-Availability Certificate is an acknowledgement or endorsement from the authorities stating that the death certificate is not available with them. Applicants have to fill Form 10 and submit it to the Registrar, who will then verify the data and issue the acknowledgement

  • Photo ID of Applicant

Once you have obtained the Non-Availability Certificate, submit it along with the death report (or any relevant document to prove the event of death) to Registrar of Death in your area to obtain the death certificate.

Submit the following documents to the Registrar of Deaths to obtain death certificate of your grand father.

  • Request Letter from Blood relation of the deceased with ID Proof
  • Affidavit cum Indemnity Bond
  • Burial Certificate/ Cemetry Report or Medical
  • Certificate issued by the Govt. Doctor or Registered Medical Practitioner
  • Photo ID of Applicant
  • Family Tree
  • In Police Cases, FIR and Post Mortem Report. If a person is missing for more than 7 years, Death Certificate can be obtained by Court Order only.
